In this section you will find info on Crete restaurants, greek tavernas, Greece restaurants, greek cuisine, crete catering, crete self service etc.Contemporary Greek cookery is typical of Mediterranean cuisine, making wide use of olive oil, grains and bread, wine, fish, and various meats, including poultry and rabbit. Greece has an ancient culinary tradition dating back several millennia, and over the centuries Greek cuisine has evolved and absorbed numerous influences. Some dishes can be traced back to ancient Greece such as skordalia,, retsina and pasteli; some to the Hellenistic and Roman periods: loukaniko; and Byzantium: feta cheese, avgotaraho, paximadi. Typical Greek food is simple, colorful and packed with robust flavours. The most characteristic and ancient element of Greek cooking is olive oil, which is present in almost every dish. It is produced from the trees prominent throughout the region, and adds to the distinctive taste of Greek food. Although many dishes show influences from Greek past, they have a distinctive style of their own which has changed little over the years. Greek cuisine has a long tradition of fine cooking and the full range of Greek dishes usually remains undiscovered by the tourist. Crete, being a place of great cosmopolitan lifestyle, offers a wide variety of restaurants and greek taverna throughout the island, covering the whole range from traditional greek cuisine to famous international dishes from the italian, french and meadle-east cuisine. Typical drink in Crete is the so called Tsikoudia or raki. It's a grape-based spirit made from the distillation of pomace, i.e., the pieces of grapes (including the stems and seeds) that were pressed for the winemaking process. It is a pomace brandy comparable to an Italian grappa or French marc, and is flavored with terebinth. Although it carries a strong taste, its alcohol content usually runs at about 38 percent. But, since it is often home-produced by individuals in villages throughout Crete, the alcohol content can range from 35-65 percent.
