The Athens - Crete ferry trip from Piraeus to Heraklion lasts from 5 to 9 hours, depending on the type of ferry (regular or high-speed). You can chose either to travel by day or night. If you travel by night, you will reach Heraklion around 6 in the morning, which means that you have all day in front of you!
Notice that the ferry line from Athens to Crete is very popular so it's really a good idea to board a couple of hours before departure in order to avoid the crowd.
